Lei Contest Rules
The making and giving of lei is significant to Hawaiians and all who call Hawai‘i home. Aloha and good intentions are infused in the entire process – from collecting and prepping materials, to stringing, braiding, or weaving and finally in gifting
Lei entries may be po’o (head lei) at least 21” long, or ā’ī (neck lei) at least 24” long. You may enter one lei into any or all categories.
Please contact Mary Huyck and let her know your entries: jailpa2@yahoo.com or +1 (313) 303-0599. All lei entries must be at the Zen Center on Saturday, May 10th between 12:00 - 1:30 pm.
You’ll be given a tag with a number on it. Write your name on the back of the tag. Make sure name is face down because we want all lei to be anonymous for the judging.
The contest will conclude with winners announced at the end of Hula Performance – by 4:30 pm. Please leave your lei on display until 5 pm at which time you can claim your lei.
3 categories of lei will be judged:
Category 1: Pua Maoli
Real flower lei using fresh flowers or fresh greenery. Can be any style such as wili, haku, humupapa, hili, kīpu’u or kui.
Category 2: Pua Hana ‘ole
Use of artificial flowers and greenery. Also any style.
Category 3: Makakū
Creative. Let your imagination create. Any style. This lei will be judged by all participants and guests.
