Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at the Uptown Public Library - Free

  • Chicago Public Library - Uptown Branch 929 West Buena Avenue Chicago, IL, 60613 United States (map)

Share in the celebration of Hula and culture of Hawaii during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at the Uptown branch of the Chicago Public Library. June Tanoue, Kumu Hula of Halau i Ka Pono, will be giving a short lecture and then the film “Kumu Hina” will be shown.

About the film: “KUMU HINA is a powerful film about the struggle to maintain Pacific Islander culture and values within the Westernized society of modern day Hawaiʻi. It is told through the lens of an extraordinary Native Hawaiian who is both a proud and confident māhū, or transgender woman, and an honored and respected kumu, or teacher, cultural practitioner, and community leader”.
